[   Introduction   |   Additional Benefits  ]

The 2.5-inch Advantage

Supermicro brings you the energy saving advantages of 2.5-inch disk drives and high-efficiency power supply technology through optimized chassis and server solutions. When deciding if 2.5-inch HDDs are the best option for you, consider the following benefits of using 2.5-inch drives versus 3.5-inch drives:

Reduced Power Consumption

Many IT professionals have identified storage consolidation as a core strategy to cut data center costs and optimize efficiency. Such consolidation can reduce data center floor space requirements, as well as lower both ancillary infrastructure expenditures and storage management costs, while significantly boosting storage system utilization.

Small form factor 2.5-inch disk drives are spearheading a new class of high-I/O-density storage solutions, such as the Supermicro 2.5-inch HDD chassis series, that facilitate rapid and cost-effective storage consolidation. For enterprises seeking to maintain current capacity and I/O performance levels while reducing data center footprint, the next generation 2.5-inch disk drives integrated with Supermicro's chassis are just such a solution. They offer superior I/O performance, yet require far less data center space and power while enhancing performance, allowing IT managers to reach aggressive cost reduction targets.

At idle and in operation, the 2.5-inch form factor drive takes 65% less power than its larger 3.5-inch cousin and produces less heat. Over a large number of drives housed in a modern data center, the power savings can be substantial.

Greater Storage Density

Because the 2.5-inch disk drive is smaller in every dimension than the prior generation 3.5-inch drive, the resulting volume is over 72% smaller-about a quarter the size of the larger drives. This smaller size allows for double the number of 2.5-inch drives (compared to 3.5-inch) in 1U, 2U, 3U, and 4U chassis.

Improved Performance

Performance increases dramatically due to the smaller platter and consequently shorter seek times. The small size of the drives enables 2.5-inch drives to deliver 130 to 150 percent greater system performance in the same footprint.

Greater Reliability

Industry drive manufacturers indicate 2.5-inch drives have up to 15% better mean time between failure results (higher reliability) than larger 3.5-inch drives. The increase in reliability is based on tighter drive packaging, smaller parts, and improved vibration attenuation. When handling transactional data, which must be available 24 x 7 x 365, increased disk drive reliability is important to enterprise customers.

An additional advantage is that smaller drives produce less noise than their larger counterparts, helping to create a more work-friendly data center environment. They also produce less heat and thus reduce cooling cost.

Hardware or Host-based RAID Support

Data protection gets a boost from small drives thanks to the ability to deploy RAID 5 or higher protection on our servers. Most servers will see an increase in the number of drives from 50% to 100% when they adopt the small form factor. The smaller drives make it possible to populate a server with a greater number of drives, and therefore deploy more flexible RAID configurations, improving performance and protection. In addition, less ancillary infrastructure is required (routers, switches, cabling, UPS and rack cabinets, power, cooling), increasing efficiency and improving operations.

Redundant Cooling with Failover Support

Our full suite of 2U, 3U, 4U and Double-Sided Storage® SAS2 expander chassis incorporate additional advanced features, such as fully redundant cooling designs, that protect system operation and performance even if a fan fails. Other features include SES-2 enclosure management and iPass cables that minimize the number of internal cables, thus improving system airflow, cooling, performance and reliability.
